In the initial position the white pieces form a 2x2 cluster.

1. Nxc5! 1. Nxa5? Bd4+! (1... Bb4+? 2. Kb3! (2. Nxb4? stalemate) 2... Bxa5 3. Na3#) 2. Nxd4 b4+! 3. Kb3 stalemate 1... b4+! 1... Nc4 2. Na3+ Nxa3 3. Bxa3 +- 2. Nxb4 Nc4!

3. Ba1!! 3. Kxc4? Kxb2 = 3... Na3 3... Kxa1 4. Kc2! Na5 5. Kc1 Nb3+ 6. Nxb3#; 3... Na5 4. Nc2 +- 4. Nb3 Nb5+ 5. Kc4 5. Kd3? Nd4! 6. Kxd4 stalemate 5... Nd4! 6. Bc3! 6. Bxd4? stalemate; 6. Kxd4? stalemate
